Messages of condolence

Murder of Nigerian IANSA activist
Dr Vincent Makanju

Vincent Makanju was an extraordinary man who dedicated himself to conflict resolution and peace education activities across his home country, Nigeria. Tragically, his life was cut short on Wednesday, 11 October 2006 when he was murdered at his home by armed gunmen.

In addition to fulfilling the demands of his position as Research Fellow in the Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Vincent worked tirelessly as the founding Director of the Peace Education Centre in Ile-Ife.

Among the Centre’s extensive list of achievements was the training of more than 1000 young people in conflict resolution, providing participants with skills and knowledge they could put to use in their own neighbourhoods and communities. A strong advocate of the Global Action to Prevent War and Armed Conflict program, Vincent organised and hosted a number of GAPW and Peace Education Centre events.

Vincent will be sorely missed by the international peace community. He was a warm and intelligent man whose commitment to peacebuilding never failed to impress all those who worked alongside him. IANSA extends its most sincere condolences to Victor’s family and friends on the tragic occasion of his death.

Messages of condolence may be emailed to condolence@iansa.org for posting on this site.

Thanks to Waverly de Bruijn of GAPW for her assistance in compiling this tribute.

Dear family and friends of Vincent,

I feel deeply with the family and near friends of Vincent, whom I met at the Barcelona peace meeting 2004 and I cannot believe that such a wonderful person got murdered.

I hope for his family and friends and his soul that his spirit and work can go on and I would be happy to hear about and find ways to support his memory through peace work in Nigeria and at his university in cooperation with other universities maybe in Europe.

I will put a picture of him and his work on my website and I feel ashamed, that maybe we did not support him enough and that again some of the best get murdered but his hopes and his work they could not kill!!!

In solidarity and with the wish that the murderers and the interests behind them find punishment and the rule of law and the freedom of the press to write the truth about the life and work of Vincent and his friends.

May God bless you all and keep your love for Vincent and his work against smal arms and for peace education alive.

Best wishes from

I was saddened to hear about the murder of Dr Vincent Makanju but was reminded of how active the devil is in this world.

I was reminded of a something I recently reread in the bible and it's applicable now . Dr Makanju has lived in the light and everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their evil deeds will be exposed. Dr Makanju lived by the truth which comes into the light, so that it may be plainly seen that what Vincent Makanju has done has been done through God. My sincere condolences to the Makanju family and us in in this world at large. But remember God is building a powerful heavenly army and needed another great strategist , one who lived in the light. May God have mercy on us here on earth so we can continue to fight for peace, because Vincent Makanju is safe now.

"This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. "

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers."

1 John 3:11-16 NIV

With sympathy and prayers in your grief

To the bereaved family of Dr. Vincent Makanju,

It is indeed tragic that Dr. Vincent Makanju was murdered by intruders in his flat on Oct 11.

The key words of this age seem to be violence and hatred. It is unfortunate that the victims of these violent acts are the very people who are trying to bring some kind of peace and happiness on earth. We can only hope that sooner or later the world will become a better place and this will be primarily due to continuous efforts and selfless sacrifice of civil society activists like Dr. Vincent Makanju.

Members of Sasanet Mumbai join in praying that God gives every member of Dr. Vncent Makanju's family the courage to face these trying times and the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

Dear Makanju Family,

I have learnt from IANSA about the great loss you have experienced on the 11 October 2006. The world we live in is very much challenged by guns and gun related violence and crime. There's a lot that needs to be done, and in that includes our governments nationally and internationally to fully embark on doing something about it.

As a survivor of gun related crime, I pledged to try and make a change, in life no matter how small it maybe or may look.

I therefore share with you at this time my deepest sympathy and hope for the best for all in the family. I will keep you in my prayers and I know through God there's a way!

Many thanks,
