Job Description
   
Title: Campaigns Officer
Reference: CAM01
Purpose: To support IANSA’s global, regional, national and theme-based campaigns aimed at stopping the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons.

The Campaigns Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing IANSA’s campaigning strategy, including by developing campaigning resources; developing, participating in and advising on opportunities for global, regional, national and thematic campaigns; supporting the development of IANSA member organisations’ campaign skills and capacity; and contributing to the effective functioning and development of the IANSA Secretariat.

Salary: £23 - 27,000, or more for an exceptional candidate
Term: 2 year contract
Roles and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Director the Campaigns Officer will:

  • Develop, plan and implement strategic campaigns in line with agreed priorities.
  • Maintain close contacts with people responsible for campaigning activities in IANSA member groups and in other relevant civil society organisations, with a view to ensuring that the input of the IANSA Secretariat in campaigning activities is relevant, necessary, timely and consistent with IANSA’s workplan.
  • Devise and coordinate the design and production of relevant campaign materials in a variety of appropriate languages, ensuring in particular that campaign messages and statements are consistent with IANSA’s missions, its methods and objectives, and enjoy the widest possible support amongst IANSA member organisations, and that the materials are consistent with the needs of a diverse and multicultural network.
  • Identify emerging thematic and regional issues which may be the object of campaigning activities involving IANSA’s Secretariat, and provide relevant advice to the Director on such issues.
  • Provide specialist support to the campaigning activities of the thematic and regional networks of IANSA member groups, ensuring that their respective areas of expertise are used in IANSA campaigns
  • Design and implement capacity-building activities designed to assist IANSA members to understand the process of campaigning and improve their ability to undertake effective campaigns.
  • Represent as appropriate, and under the direction of the Director, IANSA to civil society organisations and other bodies.
  • Maintain an overview of key political, legal and social developments worldwide, directly relevant to current and potential IANSA campaigning activities, and contribute related advice to the development of IANSA’s workplans.
  • Assist the Director in the development of funding proposals, and monitor expenditure against budget
  • As a member of the IANSA Secretariat, make a strong contribution to the effective functioning of the Secretariat by supporting the activities of the Director and other members of staff, and undertaking other activities as directed.
Person Specification :

The successful candidate will need:

  • A degree (or equivalent) in international relations, law, community development, public policy or a related field. (E)
  • A thorough understanding of the discourse on small arms and light weapons generally and policies for their control in particular and the international policy environment in which these issues are addressed. (D)
  • Demonstrated experience of developing international campaigns, including proven ability to generate new ideas, to set achievable and strategic objectives, to determine incremental steps to be taken towards achieving objectives, to implement activities consistent with financial and human resources constraints and to meet agreed deadlines. (E)
  • Specific skills in one or more key campaigning tactics (eg media work, popular campaigning, lobbying). (E)
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience of campaigning both regionally, internationally and thematically. (E)
  • Experience of representing an organisation at a national/regional or international level. (E)
  • Demonstrated ability to write campaign materials. (E)
  • Proven political judgement. (E)
  • Proven negotiation and influencing skills. (E)
  • Experience of working successfully with others and ability to motivate partners from a distance. (E)
  • Experience of working across different cultures. (E)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. (E)
  • Excellent command of French or Spanish (D)
  • Good command of other languages (D)
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively. (E)
  • Proven time management, work planning and organisational skills. (E)
  • Ability to travel (up to 2 months each year). (E)
