To support IANSA’s work in influencing policy outcomes aimed at stopping the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons (SALW).
The Policy Officer will be responsible for monitoring external policy developments of interest to IANSA and its members, developing IANSA policy on SALW, participating in and advising on opportunities for policy development and advocacy, assisting IANSA members to understand policy issues and influence policy related process. |

| Roles and Responsibilities: |
Under the direction of the Director the Policy Officer will:
- Build and maintain an excellent knowledge of international and regional policy and policy processes related to SALW.
- Actively identify and assess opportunities to influence international policies on SALW and recommend activities aimed at securing that influence.
- Build and maintain close contact with people responsible for policy in IANSA member organisations and in other relevant organisations, with a view to ensuring that the input of the IANSA Secretariat in policy matters is relevant, necessary, timely and consistent with IANSA’s workplan.
- Provide policy advice and support to the Director, IANSA’s thematic networks, the UN Strategy Working Group and other relevant internal committees or working groups.
- Undertake policy-based research and consultations.
- Facilitate internal policy development processes.
- Draft policy documents for approval.
- Draft other documents on policy related themes, including for the IANSA website, newsletter and external publications and outlets.
- Design and implement capacity-building activities designed to help IANSA members understand policy issues and effectively influence international and regional policy processes.
- Provide advice on how policy activities can be included in IANSA’s communications and campaigning work and support the integration of activities designed to secure policy outcomes in communications and campaigning strategies.
- Maintain an overview of key political, legal and social developments worldwide, directly relevant to current and potential IANSA campaigning activities, and contribute related advice to the development of IANSA’s workplans.
- Assist the Director in the development of funding proposals, and monitor expenditure against budget .
- As a member of the IANSA Secretariat, make a strong contribution to the effective functioning of the Secretariat by supporting the activities of the Director and other members of staff, and undertaking other activities as directed.

| Person Specification : |
The successful candidate will need:
- A degree in international relations, law, political science, public policy or a related field. (E)
- A thorough understanding of the discourse on small arms and light weapons generally and policies for their control in particular, and of the international policy environment in which these issues are addressed. (E)
- Demonstrated experience of policy development and influencing work, preferably in an international setting, including proven ability to identify policy objectives, determine incremental steps in securing those objectives, implement activities consistent with financial and human resource constraints and meet agreed deadlines. (E)
- Experience of undertaking policy-related capacity building work with international partners. (E)
- Demonstrated ability to undertake policy research and write policy materials for diverse audiences. (E)
- Record of publication on policy on SALW or a related field. (D)
- Experience of representing an organisation at a national/regional or international level. (E)
- Proven political judgement. (E)
- Proven negotiation and influencing skills. (E)
- Experience of working successfully with others and ability to motivate partners from a distance. (E)
- Experience of working across different cultures. (E)
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing. (E)
- Good knowledge of either French of Spanish. (E)
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively. (E)
- Proven time management, work planning and organisational skills. (E)
- Ability to travel (up to 2 months each year). (E)
