South African gun control activist shot
IANSA members send messages of support

18th January 2004

Thank you from Thembani Dyule

Dear All,

I would like to send my greatest appreciation to all at the IANSA members and Networks for the support you have given me when I was in hospital. It's a great pleasure to have survived the attack, and I thank you all for the support and encouragement you have given me, that made me much stronger. I also thank God through all.

I am much better now, but still working with a physiotherapist as my right arm was affected by the bullet wound behind my ear. I am trying my best to use it, though I cannot write well now. My hand feels a bit numb, I cannot move my right hand fingers fast but I'm doing some exercises with the therapist and it is helping.

I am very grateful for all the support. Lots of love to you all. Many thanks

Thembani Dyule

On 11 December we received this report from our colleagues at Gun Free South Africa:
Thembani Dyule

'Just to let you and the IANSA network know that one of GFSA's fieldworkers from Cape Town was shot last night. His name is Thembani Dyule. A wonderful, dynamic and committed young man. He was taking his girlfriend home when some youths (he estimates they were under 17 years of age) attempted to hijack his car. This was in Nyanga, a township near Cape Town. They were unsuccessful in the hijacking but shot him twice, once in the shoulder and the other in his head. He has been very lucky with the gun shot to his head - it entered just below his ear and skimmed along the side of his face exiting just above his eye. It seems at this stage that only soft tissue damage has been sustained in the head wound. We are uncertain about the extent of the damage to his arm from the bullet to his shoulder. He is in good medical care and still in ICU. Everyone in the organisation is a bit shocked and feeling vulnerable - a reminder of the risks we take every day in this country.'

On 16 December we received this from GFSA:

A quick update on Thembani. We have just spoken to him on his mobile in hospital. He sounds cheery and just feeling very lucky to be alive. He is already out of ICU since the weekend and doing well. He expects to leave hospital already this Thursday and will go for some follow up. He says he still cannot move his fingers in his right hand that well but will be getting physio soon. He is recovering well. He has received many of the messages from IANSA and is extremely touched and appreciative of the support from the international community of small arms activists. Thank you for your solidarity and quick action - from all of us at GFSA.

The IANSA Secretariat sends best wishes and hopes for Thembani Dyule's recovery. We have received a number of messages of support for Thembani which are reproduced below:

Such bad news. Reading your information about this violent act against IANSA member in South Afrika I was really shocked, though I hear such news every day. I have to note the bravery of this young man, who defended himself and his girlfriend. Unfortunately things like this are happening every moment somewhere in this world.

We have to do our best in peaceful propaganda and save as many lives as possible.
I pray for this man. Hope he recovers soon and become more motivated to campaign against small arms.

Best regards from Abkhazia

I am a very interested observer in Australia of IANSA activities and sometime contributor to discussion. Through IANSA I was very distressed to hear of the gunshot injuries to Thembani Dyule. I sincerely hope that he has a full recovery  He and other brave and committed members of GFSA deserve the unreserved acclaim of all those dedicated to controlling and ultimately eliminating the too easy access to small arms. Please give him my best wishes. And to all members of GFSA please convey my congratulations on your valiant fight to achieve these ends. Sincerely,

Neville Petersen

I was shocked to read on the IANSA website today of your awful experience. I have not until now really engaged with the issue of arms control, but I will certainly be taking a keen interest after hearing about what happened to you. It is both disturbing and unfortunate that you are certainly not alone in your suffering thanks to the proliferation of arms in every country of the world.

Be strong and accept my wishes for a speedy recovery.

We are shocked at the news of Thembani being shot at but we are not surprised as it may happen to any one of us at any moment in the current situations that prevail in many countries.

The news reminds everyone once again about the importance of a uniform global campaign against uncontrolled use of small arms and its proliferation around the globe.

Please convey to Thembani and other colleagues at GFSA that we from BDPC Dhaka and on behalf of all other colleagues in Bangladesh express our sympathy for Thembani and hope he will recover soon.

Bien Cher Thembani,

TO GET TOUGH ON ARMS. OH YES,  SO IT'S HIGH TIME TO GET WISE AND SAY FAREWELL TO ARMS !

Some 12,000 people have died during the Maoist insurgency and the fight is still going on. IANSA's effort and a deep concern against Small Arms is really appreciable. Dear Thembani

We at Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria receive the news of the gun shots received by Thembani Dyule of the Gun Free South Africa with deep shock and sadness. Please accept our sympathy on the incident.

This incident has given us more power to ever pursue our objective of eliminating the proliferation of hand guns in our world especially as they are currently subscribed to in Nigeria because of government's administrative lapses.

On behalf of member of the Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria, I wish Mr. Dyule speedy recovery and spiritual renewal in fighting assiduously for a better world that is free from the use of dangerous weapons.

Yinka Jegede

Dear Thembani Dyule,

Certainly, the armed attack on our colleague is not good news. We shall issue a comprehensive release on this in the Nigerian media. However, The Niger Delta Project for Environment, Human Rights and Development (NDPEHRD) received with grave concern
reports of armed attack on our colleague from South Africa, Thembani Dyule of Gun Free South Africa. Sadly, the gun is out of control with its distasteful consequences on our population.

NDPEHRD condems the attack in strong terms. We call on the South African authorities to disarm the boys before they turn our struggle to create a gun free and happy society into a nightmare. Who knows who is the next victim?

While we wish Dyule quick recovery we  hope the authorities will bring the murderous squad to book to forestall further occurrences.

Bonjour,

Estimado amigo Thembani Dyule,
