The Control Arm campaign in Paraguay |
| During a press conference at the offices of Amnesty Paraguay, Maria Cecilia Gortari, of IANSA member the Sociedad Paraguaya de Criminología, presented the Control Arms campaign, its objectives and activities in Paraguay. She joined Michelle Breuer and Carmen Colaza from Amnesty International Paraguay in calling for an international Arms Trade Treaty. The press conference also introduced the new interagency working to advise on improving the national legislation and implementation of existing gun control measures. Working group members who attended included representatives of the women’s group Fundación Kuña Aty, the crime research institute INECIP, the office of the Vice-president of Paraguay, the Ministries of Justice and Interior, the Asunción city council, the Human Rights Commission and the Director of Defence Procurement. Cecilia Gortari was interviewed by several radio and TV stations. Several national newspapers covered the press conference, and the newspaper ABC Color also published an article in advance, based on the press release that Cecilia had sent out. |
