The Coalition of women’s groups on Gun Control Legislation organised a workshop for women on the theme ‘Peace, Justice and Security through Disarmament’, which was opened by the Commissioner of Police, who also responded to concerns by women on arming the police force and the role of the police in relation to the Arms Act. The President of the Law Society spoke on the controversial Promotion of Reconciliation Bill, which has an amnesty clause to those who committed crimes of violence and gross human right violations from 19 May 2000 (coup in Fiji which overthrew the government) to March 2001, which is believed to have ‘political motivations’. The event received wide media coverage in TV One news, Radio Legend FM and several newspapers. IANSA members were also interviewed on Radio Fiji.
