| Senegal: Meeting with the Defence and Security Commission of the National Assembly |
On 8 June, in the middle of the Global Week of Action against Small Arms, three IANSA members in Senegal, OXFAM, AFSTRAG, and MALAO met with five members of the Defence and Security Commission of the Senegalese National Assembly. The IANSA members gave presentations on human security in Senegal, the objectives of the Control Arms campaign, the work of civil society and the creation of a new Arms Control Coalition, and international, regional and national initiatives on the regulation of SALW. The parliamentarians were very receptive to the presentations and pledged to support the work of the civil society Coalition to combat small arms.
It was decided that the Coalition and the National Assembly would work together in the future. In particular, the Coalition will organise a training seminar for MPs on SALW and a Day of Action at the National Assembly during a parliamentary session during which the Coalition will lobby parliamentarians, and pass around a petition for them to sign and display a photo exhibition on small arms. Other issues raised at the meeting included collaboration between parliamentarians and the National Commission on Small Arms, parliamentarians' participation in the 2005 BMS and the possibility of a civil society-run workshop for members of the ECOWAS parliament.
