Green Leaf for Democracy (GLED) organised two soccer matches in Hudur and Bosaso in Somalia as part of its Week of Action activities. In the capital city of Mogadishu there was widespread media coverage in newspapers, radio and online news services. Daily reports of GLED activities were on Radio Banadir and articles published in the Ayaamaha newspaper. Radio Banadir broadcast 7-minute programmes everyday during the Week of Action.

There was good public awareness through media coverage. Military experts participating in the radio programmes sent out simple, yet effective messages to the public such as “Hadi qori ad qado, dagal filo, hadi qalin ad qado, waxbarasho filo” (if you take a gun, you expect fighting, if you take a pen, you expect education).

The Speaker of the Parliament, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden’s speech on 12 June, at the closing of the events for the Week of Action was widely broadcast by most media outlets. Posters, photos and stickers were well received by the public and arms campaigners with the slogans and messages used during the Week of Action being adapted by other campaigners and individuals participating in debates related to small arms.

GLED appeals to the local and international community, the government and the UN to take steps to:

1. Monitor countries that violate the UN arms embargo on Somalia - Resolution number 733 (1992) January 23, 1992; Stop the importation of weapons to Somalia and providing arms to rival factions.
2. Sign and ratify the Arms Trade Treaty and the UN Firearms Protocol and impose stricter controls on arms.
3. The fighting parts in Elwak, Hudur, Baladwein, Mudug, Galgadud, and Baidoa to stop the fighting with out condition and stop the displacement of the people, and take into account that there will be time that all their crimes will be before the justice.
4. Take legal action against countries, organizations or individuals who violated the UN resolution 733 (1992) 23, January 1992 (the arms embargo in Somalia) and the ceasefire signed by Somalia’s Faction leaders in Eldoret Kenya, on October 27, 2002.
5. Facilitate civilian disarmament.
