UN Small Arms Process

International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), leading members of the IANSA Public Health Network, are using the Week of Action to highlight the public health aspects of small arms:

In Spain, Plataforma per la Pau Lloret has issued press releases in Catalan expressing their support for the UN Programme of Action (UN PoA) on small arms.

Women in Alternative Action, an IANSA member in Cameroon, marked the 10 year anniversary of the UN Programme of Action on small arms (PoA) with a people’s consultation on the Central African Convention on Small Arms, also known as the Kinshasa Convention.

Disarm Domestic Violence

Women comprise a small proprtion of the users of guns, yet suffer greatly from them, and are also vital to any successful disarmament process. This 2004 report contains information on the way guns affect women, and how women's rights groups are mobilised to prevent gun violence. It was written for the Control Arms Campaign was produced by Amnesty International, IANSA and Oxfam.

The Arms Trade Treaty

Amnesty International and the Control Arms campaign call on IANSA members to sign an online appeal to governments that calls for a bullet proof Arms Trade Treaty.

On 21-22 May 2012, IANSA together with the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) organised a conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) to prepare for the ATT Diplomatic Conference in July 2012.

More than $2.2bn worth of arms and ammunition have been imported since 2000 to countries operating under arms embargoes, according to the new report “The Devil is in the Detail”  by Oxfam International.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

In Burundi, the Eastern African Sub-Regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI) is conducting a  training on gender and small arms for representatives of the DRC, Central African Republic and Burundi, all Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) Member States. The expert trainers were trained by IANSA Women at EASSI and come from the Burundi National Focal point on SALW. The objective of the training is to sensitise participants about the gender dimensions of small arms and light weapons.

IANSA member AVREO in the DR-Congo broadcast a message annoucing the Week of Action Against Gun Violence 2012 on Radio Umoja in Fizi Territory. Clashes between the FARDC and Mai Mai have prevented them from transmitting further broadcasts on the Tuugane radio station.

In Barcelona, the International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) is organising a talk on the Arms Trade Treaty with Xavier Alcalde, ICIP researcher and Jordi Armadans, and director of Fundació per la Pau (Peace Foundation), IANSA member in Spain. Both will share their perspectives on the preparatory committees and the upcoming diplomatic conference.
