Sri Lanka: Petition to push Parliament on implementing UN PoA and Firearms Protocol

APHR has opened an online petition calling on the Parliament of Sri Lanka to amend national gun laws in compliance with the UN Firearms Protocol and the UN Programme of Action on small arms to help prevent gun violence and the proliferation of illegal guns.

Israel: Newly proposed law threatens efforts to control small arms in security industry

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Argentina: Guns used in more than half of all murders of women

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

Uganda: 300,000 small arms smuggled into East Africa in the past 10 years

A total of 300,000 small arms have been smuggled into Uganda and other East African Community countries over the last 10 years, according to the East Africa Action Network on Small Arms (EAANSA). In a recent press conference, they called on governments of the East African Community to support a strong ATT which is legally binding and includes criteria that can help prevent arms transfers where there is a substantial risk that they will be used to violate international human rights, humanitarian law or undermine development.

Nigeria: West African countries gather in Nigeria to discuss ATT

On April 26-27, representatives of civil society and the Control Arms coalition met with 15 member states from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, Nigeria. Discussions focused on strengthening the ECOWAS common position on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) ahead of the final ATT negotiations in July.

Switzerland: Student films support ATT campaign

AI Switzerlandproduced four short videos in English with a class of art students in Zürich to support the ATT campaign. Watch the videos on the Amnesty Switzerland website here.

West Africa: Football match raises awareness on the ATT

West African Amnesty International Sections are organising a football match to raise awareness for the Golden Rule in the Arms Trade Treaty. AI Sections participating in the tournament are: AI Benin, AI Burkina Faso, AI Mali, AI Senegal, AI Togo. The big finale will be on 16 June. Meanwhile, AI Côte d'Ivoire is organising a public debate and AI Mali has already collected over 10.000 signatures for the Global Appeal.

DR-Congo: Students discuss Kinshasa Convention at the University of Goma

M. Mwenebatende Dufina Tabu, president of the Association des Volontaires du Congo (ASVCO) gave a presentation to students of the University of Goma, following by a Q&A session on the week of action campaign, gun violence and the Kinshasa Convention. The students all expressed the wish to participate in a conference on small arms control and to encourage others to sign a petition calling on the central government of the DRC to ratify the Kinshasa Convention. Following the discussions, students decided to collect signatures on Friday at the university.
