UN Small Arms Process

On 6 May, Portugal ratified the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition, also known as the 'Firearms Protocol'.

IANSA is now preparing for the UN Programme of Action Open Ended Meeting of Governmental Experts (MGE), which will take place on 9-13 May 2011 at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

The Arms Trade Treaty

In Pakistan, IANSA member Alliance for Peace & Disability Rights (APDR) and SPRING International have organised a series of events to raise awareness and mobilise around arms control in schools and local communities in conflict affected areas in the Swat District.

The US has repeatedly transferred arms to Egypt, including small arms and ammunition, despite evidence of Egyptian security forces using excessive force against protesters.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has signed an Interfaith Declaration on an Arms Trade Treaty. He said, "A historic decision was made in 2009 to negotiate a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

In Nigeria the International Physicians to Prevent Nuclear War (IPPNW) celebrated the Global Week of Action with adverts on Radio Silverbird Rythm.

In Equatorial Guinea, Amigos de la Naturaleza y del Desarrollo de Guinea Ecuatorial (ANDEGE) travelled to 18 destinations around the country to meet with local groups and talk about the Week of Action and ANDEGE's work as members of IANSA and the Central Africa Action Network on Small Arms (RASALAC).

As part of the Week of Action, Women for Peace and Democracy Nepal (WPD-Nepal), RUWON Nepal and Raksha Nepal jointly organised an interactive discussion in Kathmandu with women leaders on the impact of small arms on women and girls.
