UN Small Arms Process

20 June 2014

The final meeting of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of the States considered agenda item 10, the consideration of the Final Draft Document. Chairman Tanin introduced the oral revisions and editorial changes that would ensure the consistency of the document. Chairman Tanin asked the delegates for their consensus in the adoption of the Final Draft Document, and it was so decided. The floor was then opened for statements after the adoption.

19 June 2014 - Morning Session

The seventh meeting of the BMS5 was called to order by Chairman Zahir Tanin and began with statements by international, regional and non-governmental organisations.

18 June 2014 - Morning Session

The 5th meeting of the BMS5 was called to order by Chairman Zahir Tanin. The session broke up for delegation consultation then reconvened to discuss international cooperation and assistance.

17 June 2014 – Morning Session

The third meeting of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of States was called to order by moderator, Anthony Simpson, of New Zealand. This session debated on the implementation of ITI for states to identify and trace small arms and light weapons and their ammunitions in a timely manner as contained in document a/conf/192/bms/2004/1. Two brief presentations were made on the related topic as proposed by the chair.

16 June 2014 – Morning session

The morning session was opened by the Deputy High Representative of Disarmament Affairs, Virginia Gamba.  She recalled that while over the past years there have been major achievements, member states still faced daunting challenges and hundreds of thousands of lives across the globe were destroyed by guns. Illegal guns created crime, conflict, threatened international aid workers and impeded development.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

On International Women's Day, the Coalition for Gun Control in Canada and a wide range of organisations promoting women's safety continue their fight for the national long gun registry.

IANSA Women all over the world are celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March, highlighting the campaign Disarm Domestic Violence, and calling for the inclusion of references to gender based violence in the Arms Trade Treaty.

The Arms Trade Treaty

On 16 February, Religions for Peace hosted a summit on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in Birmingham, UK.

British arms dealer Gary Hyde was arrested last month in the US charged with conspiring to illegally export almost 6,000 Chinese-produced AK-47 magazines to the US in breach of an American embargo.

Amnesty International and campaigners worldwide are calling on their governments to immediately impose an arms embargo on Libya because firearms and other weapons have reportedly been used for serious violations of international human rights law.

IANSA had an active presence at this year’s World Social Forum, held in Dakar, Senegal from 6 to 11 February.

On 16 February, IANSA members Amnesty International UK, Oxfam and Saferworld hosted a panel debate on the Arms Trade Treaty in the Houses of Parliament, UK.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

In Pakistan, the Society for The Empowerment of People (STEP) organised a meeting for 30 Police officials from different police stations in Khushab, Pakistan.

In Macedonia, Journalists for Human Rights interviewed 1000 women with the aim of developing new research to illustrate the links between gun ownership and domestic violence.

Viva Rio launched the Children’s Disarmament Campaign at the Escola Municipal Tasso da Silveira school in Rio de Janeiro where 12 students were shot dead in April this year.

ASVOCO (Association de Voluntaires du Congo) launched the Week of Action with a press briefing in Goma, North Kivu, about the Central African Convention on small arms, also known as the Kinshasa Convention.

The Association of Volunteers for the Rehabilitation of  Orphaned Children (AVREO) announced their the Week of Action activities in a radio programme on the ‘Messager du Peuple’ radio in Uvira, South Kiv.
