UN Small Arms Process

The UN General Assembly has taken action on the resolutions passed during this year’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security.

Ambassador McLay, designated chair of the 2011 Open-Ended Meeting of Governmental Experts (MGE) has proposed that marking, record-keeping and tracing should be the theme for the meeting which will take place in New York on 9-13 May.

Small arms marking equipment worth more than US$ 350,000 was given to member states of the East African Community (EAC) in a ceremony in Arusha, Tanzania on 30 November.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

The Arms Trade Treaty

The trial against arms broker Viktor Bout begins in New York, US, on 11 October. Bout was arrested in 2008 for trying to sell arms to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

Africa suffers enormously from conflict and armed violence. As well as the human tragedy, armed conflict costs Africa around $18bn per year, seriously derailing development.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

In Sudan, Upper Hand Organisation held a community workshop to raise awareness about the harmful effects of armed violence, domestic violence and the mental health of people who are victims of armed criminal violence.

The Asian Youth Centre and the Centre for Policy Advocacy organised a public meeting on the ATT in Delhi that included a speech by Major Mitali of the Indian Army.

The Control Arms Foundation of India and Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network held a successful meeting in Imphal, Manipur on the India side of the Indo-Burma border.
