UN Small Arms Process

Cameroon: Strong CAANSA key to the implementation of Kinshasa Convention

Participants at a seminar on small arms control in Central Africa discussed how to ensure successful implementation of the ‘Kinshasa Convention’. Strengthening the Central African Action Network on Small Arms (CAANSA/RASALAC) was identified as key priority.

IANSA members at ISACS workshop

On 15-16 November, IANSA members formed part of an Expert Reference Group for a workshop in Geneva on "Shaping, Fine-Tuning and Finalising International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS)".

UN: Omnibus Resolution passed

The Omnibus Resolution on ‘The illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in all its aspects’ was adopted after some controversy by the UN First Committee on disarmament on 29 October.

Israel: Newly proposed law threatens efforts to control small arms in security industry

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Argentina: Guns used in more than half of all murders of women

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

Togo: Civil society pushes for strong African SALW strategy and Common Position on ATT

From 26-30 September, member states of the African Union are meeting in Lomé, Togo to consider a draft SALW control strategy, and elaborate an African Common Position on the ATT for the negotiating conference in 2012.

India: Religious leaders found Interreligious Movement for the ATT

On 16 June religious leaders from a range of faiths met at the Gandhi Study Centre in Chennai, India to discuss the formation of the first Interreligious Movement for an Arms Trade Treaty, led by Caritas International.

Pakistan: Communities discuss solutions to arms proliferation

Grassroots In Action (GIA) organised a seminar for the Week highlighting the impact of small arms on people and how to stop proliferation and misuse of these weapons.

US: New book about ATT and disarmament launched

The Monitoring Mechanism Towards an Arms Trade Treaty (MMTATT) held a book signing at the New York Public Library on June 18.
