UN Small Arms Process

Civil society organizations addressed First Committee on 25 October.

Throughout  the UN First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, delegations have highlighted the negative impact of small arms proliferation on women's rights, human rights, and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Two of the finalist films in the 'Shooting Poverty' competition were screened at a lunchtime event hosted by Oxfam and the Office of Disarmament Affairs.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

The Arms Trade Treaty

This document outlines recommendations that would strengthen areas of the Arms Trade Treaty that have the potential to control and reduce the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and related ammunition. The inclusion of these is vital if the Arms Trade Treaty is to be effective in saving lives and reducing serious injury to people around the world.

The Control Arms campaign has launched the "Dozen Days of Action for a Robust Arms Trade Treaty" (ATT), an interfaith campaign running from 21 September until 2 October.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

In celebration of the Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence, Global Action to Prevent War (GAPW) organised a social media workshop on “Tweeting to End Gun Violence” in New York, US.

In Southern Sudan, members of the public participated in a series of radio debates to discuss solutions to “Gun violence as an obstacle to socio- economic progress in the new Republic of South Sudan”.

In Serbia, Women in Black (WIB) held two panel debates in the Dah Theatre in Belgrade on activism, peacebuilding and theater.
