UN Small Arms Process

Two articles highlighting the link between small arms control and UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, written by IANSA women Jasmin Galace from the Philippines and Sarah Masters in the UK, is now available on the Open Democracy website.

During the third week of the UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, IANSA members continue to participate in side events, engage with delegates, and report on debates.

From 4 October until 1 November, governments are assembled at the UN General Assembly First Committee on Disarmament and International Security, which proposes and adopts resolutions on disarmament and international security.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

The Arms Trade Treaty

This brand new briefing paper gives an overview of the differences between the UN Programme of Action on small arms (PoA) and the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

On 7 September, the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) met with the UN Secretary-General as part of the 42nd Pacific Islands Forum in Auckland, New Zealand. In a joint statement issued after the meeting, they reaffirmed their commitment to cooperating on national priorities which included, “Controlling the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons and negotiation of an Arms Trade Treaty”.

“An Arms Trade Treaty makes sense for US interests”, according to a recent opinion piece by Jeff Abramson of the Control Arms Secretariat.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

On 17 June the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo hosted a seminar on celebratory gunfire and gun violence, in Pristina, Kosovo.

In DR Congo, Asvoco joined a march organised by MONUSCO for the Day of the African Child as part of their Week of Action activities.

Good Generation of Burundi, an IANSA member in Burundi, launched an awareness-raising campaign on the Kinshasa Convention by handing a brief calling for the ratification of the Convention to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
