UN Small Arms Process

The Autumn 2010 issue of the Ploughshares Monitor is now available. This issue focuses on armed conflict and armed violence and includes articles by Ken Epps on the Arms Trade Treaty negotiations, and by Maribel Gonzales on gender and the UN Programme of Action on small arms.

The Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) is arming a vigilante group in response to attacks from Lord's Resistance Army rebels.

On 22 September Gabon signed the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

The Arms Trade Treaty

The dates for next year’s meetings on an Arms Trade Treaty have now been announced:

From 31 July to 3 August women campaigners from all over the world gathered at the International Congress of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).

An article by Kenneth Epps of Project Ploughshares outlines how Canada’s contributions to discussions at the ATT PrepCom, 11-15 July, show a negative change in the country’s position on the ATT.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), leading members of the IANSA Public Health Network, are using the Week of Action to highlight the public health aspects of small arms:

Bethesaida, in partnership with Baho Mission and Action to Protect Children and Their Environment held a day of campaigning against armed violence in the district of Musanze in the Northern Province of Rwanda.

In DR Congo, UCOPASUKI featured in an interview on Radio Okapi to talk about the importance of the Kinshasa Convention and national gun laws.
