UN Small Arms Process

20 June 2014

The final meeting of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of the States considered agenda item 10, the consideration of the Final Draft Document. Chairman Tanin introduced the oral revisions and editorial changes that would ensure the consistency of the document. Chairman Tanin asked the delegates for their consensus in the adoption of the Final Draft Document, and it was so decided. The floor was then opened for statements after the adoption.

19 June 2014 - Morning Session

The seventh meeting of the BMS5 was called to order by Chairman Zahir Tanin and began with statements by international, regional and non-governmental organisations.

18 June 2014 - Morning Session

The 5th meeting of the BMS5 was called to order by Chairman Zahir Tanin. The session broke up for delegation consultation then reconvened to discuss international cooperation and assistance.

17 June 2014 – Morning Session

The third meeting of the Fifth Biennial Meeting of States was called to order by moderator, Anthony Simpson, of New Zealand. This session debated on the implementation of ITI for states to identify and trace small arms and light weapons and their ammunitions in a timely manner as contained in document a/conf/192/bms/2004/1. Two brief presentations were made on the related topic as proposed by the chair.

16 June 2014 – Morning session

The morning session was opened by the Deputy High Representative of Disarmament Affairs, Virginia Gamba.  She recalled that while over the past years there have been major achievements, member states still faced daunting challenges and hundreds of thousands of lives across the globe were destroyed by guns. Illegal guns created crime, conflict, threatened international aid workers and impeded development.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

On International Women's Day, the Coalition for Gun Control in Canada and a wide range of organisations promoting women's safety continue their fight for the national long gun registry.

IANSA Women all over the world are celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March, highlighting the campaign Disarm Domestic Violence, and calling for the inclusion of references to gender based violence in the Arms Trade Treaty.

The Arms Trade Treaty

Negotiations on an ATT are underway at UN Headquarters in New York.

On Monday UN Member States will formally begin negotiatations on a framework text for the proposed Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) in New York from 12-23 July.

The Pacific Small Arms Action Group (PSAAG) held their first workshop in Wellington (New Zealand) on 29-30 April.

As military cooperation between Israel and Latin America grows, stricter arms export controls would help prevent Israeli weapons falling into the hands of armed groups and criminals.

On 27 March, in Kinshasa (DR Congo), IANSA woman Kenneth Enim Ampi from Women for Justice in Congo organised a meeting to share the information that she gathered during the Arms Trade Treaty campaign meeting, held in Vienna (Austria) last February.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

In Brazil, Instituto Sou da Pas has launched a ‘cyberaction’ encouraging people to tweet or submit photos of themselves featuring the word ‘#desarme’ (disarmament).

The Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence 2011 has started, already we are aware of events in more than 70 countries.

In less than 3 weeks we will celebrate the Global Week of Action against Gun Violence!

The Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence 2011 will take place from 13-19 June.
