UN Small Arms Process

The Argentinean Disarmament Network held its general assembly on 22 March in Buenos Aires.

The UN Security Council adopted a Presidential Statement on Central Africa on 19 March, containing the first significant reference to small arms proliferation agreed by the Council since 2007.

The countdown has begun to the 2010 UN Biennial Meeting of States on small arms (BMS), to be held in New York 14-18 June 2010.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

The Arms Trade Treaty

Summary report of the main points of the afternoon plenary session of the fourth day of the Arms Trade Treaty Preparatory Committee, 11-15 July 2011, during which members of IANSA and the Control Arms coalition addressed the UN.

On 14 July, members of IANSA and the Control Arms coalition addressed  the UN as part of the third Preparatory Committee on the Arms Trade Tready (ATT).

The third Preparatory Committee on the Arms Trade Treaty (PrepCom), 11-15 July, is well underway at UN headquarters in New York.

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

Over 80 journalists, government officials, academics, NGO representatives and members of the public attended a conference and book launch in Kathmandu organised by the Institute of Human rights Communication Nepal (IHRICON).

Middle East Non Violence and Democracy, an IANSA member in Palestine, aired a short film on the dangers of guns on Al Quds TV, a channel with approximately 200,000 regular viewers, Youtube, Ustream and on several Facebook sites.

The Lebanese Council to Resist Violence Against Woman (LECORVAW) organised a round table discussion about “The impact of small arms on women and girls in domestic violence” in Tripoli, Northern Lebanon.
