UN Small Arms Process

This report by the UN Secretary General came as response to a statement from the UN Security Council in 2007, requesting that they receive a report on small arms every two years

This resolution endorses 15 principles for preventing human rights abuses with guns, including abuses committed by state actors (eg law enforcement) and private citizens.

The 2001 Programme of Action on small arms was adopted by the UN General Assembly after negotiations at the 2001 UN Conference on Small Arms.

Disarm Domestic Violence

An International campaign for the Elimination of Violence against Women is under way.

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

The Lebanese Council to Resist Violence Against Woman (LECORVAW) organised a round table discussion about “The impact of small arms on women and girls in domestic violence” in Tripoli, Northern Lebanon.

As part of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) have issued a statement in support of the Week of Action.

In Spain, Plataforma per la Pau Lloret has issued press releases in Catalan expressing their support for the UN Programme of Action (UN PoA) on small arms.
