UN Small Arms Process

UN: Diplomats agree to conclude Arms Trade Treaty at final negotiations set for March in 2013

On 7th November, members States of United Nations at the 67th session of UN General Assembly First committee, voted the Resolution L11 on the Arms Trade Treaty in New York at UN Headquarter. 157 voted in favour, 18 abstentions and Zero vote against. The Resolution mandates Conference on ATT to be held in March 2013. The ATT Resolution was initiated by a group of co-authors including Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Finland, Japan, Kenya and United Kingdom.

The 67th Session of the GA’s First Committee will begin on Monday 8th October at the UN Secretariat in New York.

Israel: Newly proposed law threatens efforts to control small arms in security industry

In Israel, a newly proposed ‘Security Services Law’ threatens an existing, though un-enforced, clause of the Firearms Law that restricts security guards from taking their guns home. If the proposed law were implemented it would automatically allow security guards to take their guns home whilst off-duty.

Argentina: Guns used in more than half of all murders of women

Nearly 60% of women murdered in Argentina from 1997 to 2010 were killed with a gun, according to IANSA member Asociación para Políticas Públicas (APP).

'Controller les Armes', a new book on the reality of irresponsible arms trade with a preface by Lilian Thuram, retired footballer and supporter of the Control Arms Campaign, has been published by Amnesty international France.

New 'Ploughshares Monitor' on conflict and armed violence

The Autumn 2010 issue of the Ploughshares Monitor is now available. This issue focuses on armed conflict and armed violence and includes articles by Ken Epps on the Arms Trade Treaty negotiations, and by Maribel Gonzales on gender and the UN Programme of Action on small arms.

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) has issued a paper presenting the outcomes of a series of regional seminars and other activities promoting discussion on an Arms Trade Treaty

Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence

India: One-day consultation on gun violence survivors’ rights

Manipur Women Survivors Gun Network and Control Arms Foundation of India, IANSA members in India, conducted a one-day community consultation to commemorate the Week of Action. The consultation highlighted survivors’ rights in conflict-ridden zones and called on the government to provide victim assistance and include provisions for it in the ATT. It also included a screening of the film, “The story of Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network” and a discussion on the UNPoA. Panelists included several professors from Manipur University and civil society representatives including Mrs.

Iraq: Students and youth groups support ATT and demand legislation to limit small arms proliferation

Iraqi Organization for Rehabilitating Society and Environment, IANSA member in Karbala, Iraq distributed materials and organised several discussion sessions with university students, teachers and youth groups about the need to refuse gun violence and the dangers of small arms proliferation in communities. Participants declared their support for the Arms Trade Treaty and agreed on the importance of legislation to forbid the circulation of small arms. They called on decision-makers to work with civil society to stop gun violence. 

DR Congo: 185 banners to raise awareness about gun violence and the Kinshasa Convention

ASVOCO, IANSA member in DR Congo, put up 185 banners in schools and universities in North Kivu to raise awareness about gun violence and collect signatures for a petition demanding that the Congolese government ratify the Kinshasa Convention.
