Control Arms at the World Social Forum

Speaking at the World Social Forum, Mary Robinson supported Control Arms' efforts to incorporate human rights law and protection into an Arms Trade Treaty.

Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and honorary President of Oxfam International, endorsed the move towards an Arms Trade Treaty during a speech to the World Social Forum (WSF) in Nairobi. Ms Robinson called on the WSF to support and promote the global movement towards an Arms Trade Treaty. She said the work of Control Arms would be critical to ensuring a treaty that will protect and advance human rights.

Control Arms campaigners representing over 40 organisations from all continents attended the WSF. Campaign activities included an information stand, promotion of the Million Faces petition and two Control Arms side events. A public information session was held on the campaign’s achievements and its work in 2007. The second event focused on the UN Secretary-General’s consultation on the scope and feasibility of an Arms Trade Treaty, and how civil society can participate.
