Control Arms: the People's Consultation on an ATT

In early 2007, the UN Secretary-General called for governments to submit their views on the feasibility, scope and parameters of an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).  We made sure that these submissions from governments incorporated the views of millions of people around the world who are affected by armed violence every day. This was achieved by involving organisations and people around the world who believe this treaty must be based on human rights and humanitarian law so that it can save lives.

Control Arms organised People’s Consultations in 50-plus countries around the world to give people and communities a forum to demand that their governments take action for tough international arms controls.  These consultations engaged government officials throughout the process and the outcomes of consultations were presented to government officials for inclusion in their national submission to the UN Secretary-General.
