A student with two semi-automatic handguns murdered 32 people on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia (US) on 16 April. A further 29 people were injured before the perpetrator committed suicide. He had obtained the guns and ammunition legally, despite having a history of mental instability.
Firearm death rates in the US are 4-5 times as high as in most other industrialised countries where gun laws require licensing, registration, waiting periods, references, training and especially tight restrictions on handguns. None of these measures are required under the law in Virginia.

Louise Rimmer, IANSA communications officer said: Our thoughts are with the victims' friends and families on this sad and difficult day. We think also of the survivors and their families and all affected by this appalling tragedy. IANSA calls for stricter gun control to prevent more senseless deaths in the United States. The easy availability of firearms kills 30,000 US citizens a year - a toll which is too terrible for any country to bear.
