On 3 September we commemorate
the massacre at School Number One in Beslan, Russia. An armed
group took over 1000 children and teachers hostage on 1 September
2004. On 3 September, following explosions and gunfire and
an assault by state security forces, more than 330 people
were dead, including at least 176 children. Many hundreds
of people were injured.
Details of the attack remain disputed, including how the hostage-takers
got their guns into the school and how the victims died.
IANSA members called for findings of the official investigation
into the massacre to be made public, and for measures to be
taken to prevent a similar tragedy happening in the future.
