Columbine mass shooting 20 April 1999
Columbine Memorial

Today we commemorate the tragedy that occurred in 1999 at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado (US), where 12 students and one teacher were shot dead and 21 others wounded. The perpetrators, two other students armed with second-hand firearms, then killed themselves.

At the time, the Columbine massacre was the single largest school shooting in US history. US gun laws remain relatively weak, with strong laws in one state being undermined with weaker laws in an adjacent state.

IANSA members working for tougher gun laws include the Million Mom March and the Brady Campaign. The Brady Campaign was founded by Jim Brady, press secretary to ex-President Reagan, who survived a shooting 25 years ago and now campaigns for stronger gun laws.
