Bahrain

Amnesty International Bahrain, the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, Bahrain Society for Public Freedom and Democracy Support and Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights have been involved in People’s Consultations in Bahrain. Consultations were launched with an SMS campaign that involved sending messages about the Arms Trade Treaty to 40 000 Bahrainis. Advertisements were placed in local newspapers to raise awareness of arms trade issues and several newspaper articles on these issues have been published.

Iraq

The Iraqi Organization for Rehabilitating Society and Environment held workshops in March discussing the protection of children in armed conflict and the circulation of small arms.
Jordan

Madaba for Sporting Development ran the People’s Debate in Jordan in April. A member of parliament, university officials and hundreds of students gathered at the University of Jordan for the debate. Participants in the debate signed a document urging the Government of Jordan to support an Arms Trade Treaty, and the document will be presented to Jordan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Jordan Television featured an interview about the People’s Debate and a radio broadcast on Amman Radio Net advertised a youth march that was also conducted as part of Jordan’s People’s Consultation.
Lebanon
The Permanent Peace Movement in Lebanon has been organising community consultations and other events throughout Lebanon during March and April. They have involved human rights groups, conflict resolution groups, members of parliament, media representatives, women and youth organisations from across Lebanon. Consultations were held in Ansarieh, Beirut and Mount Lebanon; participants worked in small groups to discuss arms trade issues and then signed a letter that was later delivered to Ambassador his Excellency Antoine Chedid, Director of the International Organizations Department and the focal point on arms issues.

The Arab Network for Research on Landmines and Remnants of War and Al Yarmouk are holding community and national consultations including public meetings, media work, lectures and an exhibition. Further media events, an exhibition and consultations are planned.
