International Peace Day 2006

 
International Peace Day, 21 September 2007

The International Day of Peace was established by a UN General Assembly resolution in 1981. In 2001 a new resolution called upon the international community to observe a global ceasefire on this day.

 

Cambodia

A peace statue crated from decommissioned weapons was unveiled in Kampong Thom by the Japan Assistance Team for Small Arms Management in Cambodia (JSAC).

Kenya

‘Chagua AMANI Zuia Noma’ or the Campaign for Peaceful Elections was launched by the President at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. The day was disrupted by election violence in the western constituency of South Mugirang. The AMANI Forum of parliamentarians in the Great Lakes region of Africa issued a press release.

Macedonia

A day of events was organised by CIVIL as part of a coalition of NGOs. The events included an evening concert. Click here to read the press release (in Macedonian).

Namibia

A campaign to have gun-free zones in large parts of Namibia kicked off on the International Day of Peace with 28 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Council of Churches of Namibia declaring their premises free of firearms.

Senegal

Campaigners met with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the governent's support for an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The meeting included a discussion of the 2007 First Committee of the UN General Assembly, which addresses disarmament, peace and security. The meeting was reported in the national press, including Quotidien.
