Each year activists around the world use the Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence to raise awareness, campaign for better gun laws and push for stronger regulation of the global arms trade. This year the Week of Action ran from 11-17 June. IANSA members in more than 60 countries highlighted the human cost of small arms proliferation and misuse; they also demanded that governments to enact policies that put their citizens' security first.
As well as gun violence and the proliferation of small arms, work towards an Arms Trade Treaty was a major theme of this year's Week of Action. The week came just before the UN deadline of 20 June for governments to submit their views on the feasibility, scope and parameters of a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty. IANSA members and Control Arms campaigners have been campaigning for a treaty for more than three years, and the Secretary-General's consultation with governments is a huge milestone for IANSA and our partner organisations.
Civil society organisations taking part in the Week of Action ran public events, conducted media work and generally engaged more people in the global movement against gun violence. Click on the map above or the links (at left) to read more about 2007 WoA events around the world.
