Week of Action eventLetter to parliamentarians
This letter was sent to all women parliamentarians on 22 May from an advocate at DIPREVI, the Dirección Nacional de Prevención de la Violencia y el Delito - Ministerio de Justicia. The letter calls for parliamentarians to support the Global Principles on International Arms Transfers.

El Salvador

Week of Action eventVarious activities
The IANSA Public Health Network in El Salvador organised various activities for the Week of Action including collecting photos for the Control Arms Million Faces campaign at the National University of El Salvador (25 May), issuing a press release on children and small arms calling for government action, and an address to medical students to educate them about the small arms pandemic (both 26 May).

Week of Action eventPress conference
The national small arms problem was the theme of a press conference launching the Global Week of Action on 22 May, organised by IEPADES. Women discussed campaigns and activities against small arms on at a meeting organised by IEPADES on 23 May.

Haiti:

Handover - Million Faces Petition

The Million Faces Petition was handed over to the Haitian President Mr. René Garcia PREVAL by a representative from OFAT. It was also attended by other government officials and members of Parliament. OFAT is providing advice to the delegation on the Review Conference in June-July.

The proliferation of small arms and light weapons was the theme of an information seminar for 40 people organised by OFAT-Haiti on 25 May at the Le Plazza Hotel in Port-au-Prince

Campaigners call for tougher arms control
Haitian campaigners held a press conference on 16 March to mark the start of the 100 days countdown, calling on the government to support tough international controls to stop small arms proliferation.

National handover of Million Faces petition
Parliamentarians joined IANSA members to deliver the Million Faces petition to President René Garcia Preval on 14 June. Guerda Benjamin of IANSA member OFAT spoke about the upcoming Review Conference and the need for strong Haitian representation there.

Mexico City stunt
In Mexico City’s biggest square, activists staged a stunt on 16 March to show the human impact of armed violence and called on the government of Mexico to support an international Arms Trade Treaty

Amnesty in Mexico organised an event in the city of Mexico for the Global Week of Action. The event included musicians and circus performers and Amnesty also took the opportunity to announce the delivery of photos for the Million Faces petition to the Government.

Seminar on non-violent masculinity
A conference on breaking the cycle o f masculinity and violence was organised by CEPREV and ASDI. Among the speakers was Stefan de Vylder, author of Costs of Male Violence was one of the guest speakers.

The Caribbean needs an integrated approach to regional crime, according to a report on trafficking, use and misuse of small arms in the Caribbean launched on 22 May by the Women’s Institute for Alternative Development (WINAD). Click here to read the report.
