Somalia: Community impacts of small arms proliferation
The Global Week of Action was launched at a press conference, an event which received press coverage in Banadir, Shabelle, VOD, and IQK radio stations, the newspapers Mogadishu Times, Ayaamaha Press and the Qaran Press and the weekly newspapers Panorama Press and Bilan Press. The press conference was organised by Green Leaf for Democracy – GLED, and was featured twice on talk-shows on Banadir radio, which also provided a 7-minute commentary about the effects of small arms in Somalia.
The Mayor opened the workshop stating: “I am delighted for the steps forward, I am sure if the weeks like the global week of action against small arms come in every year more than one time it will change the world and force the states to ratify the international protocol against the production and trade of small arms”.
Two Somalia online news papers printed the press release online:

30 Mogadishu local parliamentarians attended a two-day workshop starting 23 May, including the mayor and his deputies. Organised by the Green Leaf for democracy (GLED), the workshop focused on the effects of small arms in the community.

On 24 May a football match was held in Marka, a port town of Somalia at Istalin Stadium, with two level “A” teams, the Golden Stars and Uunsaney Arladi. Uunsaney Arladi won the trophy by beating the Golden Stars (3-2). Bashir Gobe, the former chair of the Somali football federation, gave the cup to the winning team stating “when playing a football game it is lucky to win, now we are playing a football game to eliminate the small arms in our community, the region and the world and I wish we will succeed that also”.
On 25 May, 1000 photos from the Million Face Petition were delivered to the Somalia information minister Mohamed Abdi Hayer Mareye by GLED members in Baidoa and the minister himself will deliver the photos to the parliament.
