Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence 2017

The Global Week of Action Against Gun Violence is taking place from 5th - 12th June 2017.

The theme for this year's week of action is:  The Road to Development and Peace Begins With Silencing the Guns. This is an important opportunity for us to tell our respective governments how concerned we are about the proliferation and misuse of small arms, urge them to take greater action, and take action ourselves. Next year's Review Conference of the UN Programme of Action on small arms provides one of the best opportunities for governments to do more on this issue, and 2017 is an important year of preparation for this 11-day meeting.

Media outreach during the Global Week of Action will also be an important part of awareness raising. If you promote the Week of Action on social media, please use the hashtags: #SilenceTheGuns  #IANSA #WeekOfAction and #EndGunViolence where possible.

To support your activities for the Week of Action, please find the following resources:

  1. A new IANSA video on the topic of small arms and the 2018 Review Conference called Silencing the Guns, which can be found here. This video (under 4 minutes) features Alex Gálvez, a survivor of gun violence; Jasmin Nario Galace of the IANSA Women’s Network; Baffour Amoa, Chair of IANSA’s International Advisory Committee; and Ivor Fung of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs. We highly encourage you to share this video, like it, and show it at events you may hold. This important new resource was made possible thanks to UNSCAR and to volunteer support.
  2. The logo for the 2017 Week of Action and the IANSA logo, for use on fliers, banners and other materials.
  3. A one-page explanation of the 2018 Review Conference.
  4. A global overview of the small arms problem.
  5. A "Gun Free Zone" sign as well as the no gun logo.
