IANSA welcomes our new UN Liaison Officer, Rose Welsch. She takes over from Michele Poliacof, whom we thank for her years of dedicated service, and for agreeing to continue sharing her wisdom and advice with us. Rose will be responsible for coordinating civil society participation in the Sixth Biennial Meeting of States on Small Arms (BMS6), to be held at UN Headquarters in New York 6-10 June 2016.
A seminar on UN SCR 1325 and the role of women in peacebuilding was held in Madrid (Spain) on 2 February. Over 200 people attended the event, which explored the main achievements and challenges facing the implementation of the Resolution.
Last week 30 journalists participated in a workshop on the “Elections without Gun Violence” campaign. The event was organised in Abidjan by Cote d’Ivoire’s National Commission on small arms and RASALAO.
IANSA Women’s Network has welcomed the appointment of Margot Wallström as the new United Nations Special Representative for sexual violence in conflict, as requested in Security Council Resolution 1888 on Women, Peace and Security.
During a conference held in Nagpur (India), 82 scientists, engineers and researchers from different regions of India were briefed on the national and international initiatives to promote stronger firearms regulation and to ban landmines and cluster munitions.
