IANSA mourns the loss of UN workers in the bomb blast at the UN headquarters in Baghdad and all those that have died in the present crisis.

Among the confirmed dead are the UN's Special Envoy to Iraq Sergio Viera De Mello, UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Program Coordinator in Iraq, Christopher Klein-Beekman, along with UN workers Fiona Watson of the United Kingdom, Ranillo Buenaventure and Marilyn Manual of the Philippines, Jean-Selim of Egypt and Rick Hooper of the United States.

A colleague in the movement against small arms, Polly Brennan, Coordinator of the Landmines and Small Arms Team at UNICEF was in the UN headquarters at the time and suffered minor injuries.

IANSA will continue to campaign against the proliferation and misuse of small arms and advocate for the rights of civilians and humanitarian workers to be able to live and work in a safe environment.

Our thoughts are with the victims, families, friends and colleagues of all those impacted by violence in Iraq.

The IANSA team
