FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
- March 20, 2002
Washington, D.C. -- Today, Michael D. Barnes, President of the Brady
Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March issued
the following statement on the impending passage of campaign finance
reform legislation in the Senate:
"Congress is finally poised to pass a meaningful campaign finance reform
bill. Passage of this legislation will be a victory for democracy and for the
millions of Americans who feel that their elected officials listen to big money
more than to their constituents. The Brady Campaign and the Million Mom March
congratulate Congress for rallying around this critical issue. Particularly deserving
of thanks are Senators McCain and Feingold and Representatives Shays and Meehan
for having the vision and determination to pursue campaign finance reform in
the face of daunting opposition. Thanks also to Tom Daschle and Dick Gephardt
for their leadership.
"That we have come this far is proof that, when the American people rally
behind a worthy cause and make their voices heard, legislators will listen. Thousands
of Brady Campaign and Million Mom March members across the nation joined activists
from other groups- especially our friends at Common Cause - in contacting members
of Congress to demand that our campaign contribution system be fixed.
"This bill will level the playing field so that our lawmakers are no longer
beholden to special interest groups like the National Rifle Association. We know
that the vast majority of Americans support common-sense gun safety measures,
just as they support campaign finance reform. This bill will help to ensure that
the voices for stronger gun laws are heard"
Note: The Brady Campaign united with the Million Mom March will issue
a full press release upon final passage of the bill.
