Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim to Chair EPG Executive Meeting,
Count Albi to Brief Delegates to First Committee on Paris Process,
UN Headquarters, New York, October 8

Washington, D. C. Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, former Secretary-General of the OAU and Co-Chair of the EPG, will chair an executive meeting of the Group at UN headquarters, conference room B, on October 8, 3-5PM. The meeting will provide an important venue to assess progress made in implementing the Programme of Action (A/Conf.192/15) adopted by last year’s UN Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects and to develop the Group’s work programme in the run-up to the biannual review conference in 2003.

The morning of October 8, 11AM-1PM, conference room B, Count Albi, EPG Executive Director, will brief delegates to the First Committee on the Paris process. Based on the Paris Chairmen’s Report, (A/Conf.192/13) the Paris process is an informal consultative mechanism between governments, manufacturers and NGOs on voluntary measures in critical areas of Conference follow-up.

EPG is an independent commission under the joint co-chairmanship of Dr. Salim and former Malian President Alpha Oumar Konare. The Group is committed to helping advance the objectives and goals of the UN Secretary-General’s agenda for eradicating the diversion of small arms and light weapons from the licit trade to illicit traffic.
