El Salvador: Ban on carrying guns

A ban on carrying guns came into effect on 20 January in Sonsonate (El Salvador), a city seriously affected by armed violence. Last year, firearms were used in 76% of homicides, 59% of robberies against individuals and 100% of vehicle thefts there. The ban was promoted by the police, the Public Safety Committee and the Mayor, with the support of UNDP and the government of Japan. The ban will last for 60 days and will be supported by a campaign on the negative impacts of small arms proliferation. More
