Jamaica: At least 31 people killed in gun battles

At least 31 civilians and members of the security forces have been killed in Jamaica’s capital Kingston this week in gun battles that erupted after the government announced that alleged local drug lord and arms trafficker Christopher "Dudus" Coke will be extradited to the US. IANSA member Godfrey Lothian from Jamaicans for Community Development said: “We are concerned that more unarmed civilians will be injured or killed if the confrontations between police and armed men continue. We also believe that a civilian oversight mechanism needs to be established to monitor the application of the emergency powers by the security forces, especially regarding the use of lethal force.”
