WILPF-Costa Rica Petition

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) of Costa Rica has initiated a petition demanding an embargo on the shipment of weapons to Latin America and the declaration of Latin America as an arms-free zone. The petition aims to collect 5000 signatures to be handed to the United Nations. According to WILPF, Latin America spent 51 billion dollars in armaments in 2008. According to the petition text “this exorbitant sum would have been better spent on building schools, preparing teachers, providing universal health care for its populations, giving land to peasants, helping farmers diversify their crops, providing housing for thousands of homeless, educating the people”.
