ATT Prepcom: Saferworld hosts side event on ATT implementation

On the 28 February, the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations and Saferworld co-hosted an event on the key elements and of an effective and workable Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) implementation system. The panel comprised of Ambassador Pekka Ojanen, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Mr. Roy Isbister, Team Leader on Arms Transfers, Saferworld, Ambassador Paul van Ijssel, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and Fabrian Ruddyard, Director, Directorate Of Intl Security And Disarmament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Indonesia. The panellists explored a range of issues relating to the implementation of the ATT including national reporting, state compliance with an ATT, an ATT Secretariat and ways to provide states with the framework to implement the ATT effectively. The need for cooperation and assistance between states was a reoccurring theme highlighting the importance of states with more capacity assist those with less to implement the ATT.
