Venezuela: New national Commission for Arms Control and Disarmament

Venezuela has established a Presidential Commission for Arms Control and Disarmament. It was announced to the public on 13 May during a ceremony which also saw the destruction of 65,380 firearms, most of them seized in police operations. The Commission is formed by government officials, academics and civil society organisations, including Centro Gumilla and Red de Apoyo para la Paz. According to a recent national survey, firearms were used in 79.4% of homicides committed in Venezuela between June 2008 and June 2009.
