Jordan: Women's symposium hears testimony from survivor of armed domestic violence

In Amman, Jordan, the Women's Studies Centre at Jordan University organised a symposium on the impact of small arms on women in the home. Speakers included Lubna Diwany, a lawyer and women's rights activist; a judge; and Mervat, a survivor of armed domestic violence. Mervat's leg was amputated after being shot by her uncle for divorcing her violent husband. Participants cried when they heard Mervat's story, and the judge expressed frustration about the failures of the justice system to prosecute the crime and promised to follow up and ensure that perpetrators of armed domestic violence are brought to justice. 25 students participated in the event.
