West Africa: Trafficking, mercenaries a threat to regional stability, says ECOWAS

The movement of illicit arms and mercenaries across borders in West Africa poses grave danger to the stability of the region, according to the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja. In a statement it expressed its concern about the current situation and said, “The ECOWAS Commission calls on all Member States to be extra vigilant in monitoring movements across their borders. The situation requires the strict implementation of the relevant provisions of the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, their ammunition and other materials relating to inter-state cooperation and the strengthening of border controls”.
