Pakistan: targeted gun killings on the increase

In Pakistan, STEP reports that the city of Karachi is facing an increase in targeted killings with guns. So far this year 1,450 people have been shot and killed, and 150 deaths have been recorded in the first half of August. In a press conference Zubair Malik of STEP demanded that the government take immediate action to stop the proliferation of guns in the city and “deweaponise Pakistan" to stop the killings which he said mainly affect poor people, religious leaders and political activists. According to gunpolicy.org, Pakistan has one of the highest numbers of privately owned guns the world with an estimated 18,000,000 guns held by civilians and 3,341,371 held by police and military forces.
