World Humanitarian Day marked by campaigners and practitioners worldwide

Violent attacks against humanitarian workers have tripled over the past decade, resulting in more than 100 deaths annually, according to a recent report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. In addition to the direct casualties suffered by aid workers, armed violence has a detrimental impact on the provision of food, water and shelter to people affected by conflict. According to the Small Arms Survey and the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, “More can and must be done. At the very least, donors, policy makers and senior managers must acknowledge ... how the prevalence and misuse of guns inhibits access and protection". Read more here
