US: Thousands of guns missing off the inventories of arms manufacturers

At least 16,485 firearms have gone missing from the inventories of US arms manufacturers since 2009 "without a record of being legally sold", according to a new report by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. It is based on data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), but notes that because the ATF only surveyed 20% of manufacturers and gun dealers, the total number of missing guns is likely to be much higher. It also suggests that guns may also not have been marked with serial numbers, making them difficult to trace and therefore attractive to criminals. Dennis Henigan of the Brady Center said, “It is shocking that gun makers are so oblivious to public safety that they lose track of thousands of guns every year. Given the lethality of its product, the gun industry has a special duty to act responsibly”.
