2012 Preparatory Committee for the Second UN Programme of Action Review Conference
From 19-23 March 2012, UN member states are meeting at UN headquarters for a preparatory committee (PrepCom) for the Second Review Conference of the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat, and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons In All Its Aspects.
The PoA PrepCom has the potential to set the agenda for the RevCon which again will set the agenda for the next 5 years of the UN small arms process. This presents the opportunity to make real progress against the global problem of small arms proliferation and misuse by reaffirming commitment to cooperative and effective action in partnership with civil society. IANSA, as designated coordinator of civil society in the UN small arms process, is calling for the PoA to be strengthened and improved, defining a clear and practical way forward to ensure the PoA is an effective tool to prevent gun violence, whilst mindful that matters related to implementation and achievements are also important.
NGO Presentations, held on 21 March, are now available here.
IANSA has issued two position papers in preparation for the PrepCom:
The agenda, programme of work and other official documents from the proceedings are posted on the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) website for the PrepCom as they become available.
Reaching Critical Will of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom will also be posting information, documents and a daily Monitor of events on their website.
Summaries from sessions and side events during the week are posted here:
