Australia: Increase in shootings prompts call for ban on handguns

The National Coalition for Gun Control in Australia is calling for a nationwide ban on semi-automatic handguns, after a new report on crime in the state of New South Wales shows that the rate of drive-by shootings between 2010-2011 increased by 40%. Samantha Lee of the National Coalition for Gun Control said, "Handguns are the weapon of choice for drive-by shootings because they are easy to conceal, lightweight and very high powered”. David Shoebridge, a Member of Parliament for The Greens said, "If we want to reduce the lethality of criminals, if we want to reduce the number of drive-by shootings, the best step this government can take is reduce the number of those handguns in circulation".
