Control Arms statement on the sentencing on alleged arms broker Viktor Bout

On 5 April, alleged arms dealer Viktor Bout was sentenced to 25 years in prison in a US Court. He has been accused of supplying weapons that have fuelled conflicts in Africa, South America, and the Middle East, and was arrested in 2008 for trying to sell arms to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. Jeff Abramson, Director of the Control Arms Secretariat, said the Bout case demonstrates the need for an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) to regulate arms brokering and arms trade, “thereby closing the legal loopholes that continue to let the black market thrive. Until such a treaty is agreed and functioning, the global arms trade essentially remains out of control”
