Mozambique armoury explodes: Nearly 100 killed

Smoke fills the sky over Maputo following Thusday's explosion (photo by IRIN).

Nearly 100 people were killed and hundreds more injured when a military armoury exploded in Maputo (Mozambique) on Thursday, 22 March. The armoury was in a residential area of the city and several buildings, including schools and medical facilities, were also badly damaged.

IANSA member FOMICRES has been assisting people affected by the explosion and working with government officials to minimise further injuries.

This explosion is the latest in a long list of similar incidents around the world. According to SEESAC, 120 ammunition depot explosions have occurred over the last 10 years, killing more than 3500 people and injuring nearly 4000.
